Matt Barnes - Saturday, September 03, 2011

Athletic Republic Inland Empire football players had a great first week of the season in both High School and College Football. The staff would like to honor those who recieved attention by publications for week one.

In High School Football Larry Cutbirth, Quarterback at Etiwanda High School was the standout of the week. Larry completed 15 out of 20 pass attempts for a total of 194 yards and also had 4 touchdowns in a 49-36 win over Summit High School. Cutbirth's main target was another Athletic Republic athlete Raphael Barr who had 5 receptions for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns. Stephen Johnson, Quarterback at Los Osos High School completed 11 of 14 pass atempts for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns while his teammate and longtime Athletic Republic athlete Koa Labonta scored a touchdown and Los Osos reciever Steven Herber had 4 catches for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns. Upland High School quarterback Nate Romine was perfect completing 6 of 6 pass attempts for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Highlanders defeated San Bernardino 63-14. Lastly, two Chino Hills football players and Athletic Republic IE athletes, Quaterback Andrew Chavez and Reciever Jack Austin connected for 3 touchdowns together as Chino Hills lost a close game 36-34 to Bear Creek High School.

It was an exciting week of College Football for Athletic Republic IE athletes as many of them began their first season in NCAA football. There were two standout Athletic Repuublic quarterbacks that played very well. Nebraska's Taylor Martinez ran for 135 yards and scored 3 touchdowns and also was 11 of 16 for 116 passing yards to lead Nebraska over Chatanooga. UCLA fought but lost to Houston and quarterback Richard Brehaut stepped in and completed 17 of 26 passes for 264 yards and had 87 rushing yards with a total of 3 touchdowns.

Many defensive players had great games as well and it was an exciting week of football. There were many more Athletic Republic athletes who were not mentioned here who also played well and we look forward to mentioning their names in the coming weeks. Each week we will update how our athletes do in their games and highlight those who recieve national and local attention by publications.
